Due to rising temperatures and increasingly unreliable energy infrastructure, action to update Cuba’s energy grid is urgently necessary. Though the country is facing an ongoing economic crisis, potential for improvement exists especially in the opening of international collaborations with partners in the Caribbean and nongovernmental . .
As shown by the devastation to Cuba’s energy grid caused by Hurricane Ian in 2022, increases in extreme weather events can reduce the supply of fossil fuels, damage generation and grid infrastructure, reduce output, and affect the security of supply..
Cuba’s intention to transition to renewable energy generation is key, as renewables can provide climate change mitigation, reduced local air pollution, and resilience benefits over the current fossil fuel-fired power generation system..
According to data provided by the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the country’s installed power generation capacity exceeds 6 GW if all forms of generation are considered..
Cuba is currently in a vulnerable energy situation since it strongly depends on the importation of fossil energy. Strategies based on intermittent RES (solar and wind) can reduce this vulnerability, but the introduction of this type of source impacts the energy system's characteristics and aspects at a country/regional scale. Once synchronised with the CEN system, the energy storage facilities will be able to store electricity generated by solar or wind power plants and feed it into the grid when needed. Lithuania aims to generate 70% of its electricity consumption by 2030, almost half of it from renewable sources.
The four battery energy storage systems (BESS), 50MW/50MWh each, have been handed over by Fluence and are now providing services to Litgrid, the transmission system operator (TSO) in Lithuania. They followed a smaller, 1MW/1MWh pilot project to test the use case back in 2021 ..
Lavastream plans to install a thermal power plant with a capacity of around 30 MW in Klaipėda and 15 MW in southwestern Lithuania by 2028, as well as a geothermal-geological long-range electricity storage system..
The energy storage system, which will ensure the operation of the instantaneous isolated electricity reserve for Lithuania before the synchronisation with the continental European networks (CEN), will be used for the integration of energy produced from renewable energy sources after the synchronisation. Ferrier first suggested the idea of SMES in 1969. The first such device was developed in 1971 thanks to studies conducted at the University of Wisconsin. In the late 1990s, the first high-temperature superconductors (HTS) were introduced, and the first commercially available HTS-SMES of any scale was manufactured by. .
At cryogenic (very low) temperatures, the current-carrying conductor transforms into a superconductor with essentially zero resistive losses while it produces a magnetic field. As long as this is the case, a coil's current can theoretically run forever. The time constant. .
